Technology Innovation Institute is an Abu Dhabi government-funded advanced research centre that develops AI, quantum computing, cryptography, autonomous robotics, and renewable energy technologies, most notably releasing the Falcon series of open-source large language models that received significant international recognition when Falcon 40B topped the Hugging Face Open LLM Leaderboard in 2023. The institute operates as a sovereign research body of the Advanced Technology Research Council of Abu Dhabi.\n\nFully funded through Abu Dhabi government allocation, TII operates without commercial revenue objectives, instead pursuing research advances that strengthen UAE national scientific capability and attract global AI talent to Abu Dhabi. The Falcon model release under open-source licensing built a global developer community around a UAE-developed foundation model, positioning TII as a research contributor to the international AI community rather than a purely domestic organisation.\n\nTII competes in the open-weight foundation model space through its Falcon releases, which have been adopted by developers globally and integrated into commercial AI products built on open-weight models. The institute research output in AI safety, cryptography, and quantum computing addresses topics of national strategic importance for the UAE as it builds sovereign technology capabilities across critical infrastructure sectors. TII represents the Abu Dhabi government direct investment in research talent and infrastructure as a complement to the commercial AI platform development pursued by G42.
