Zhu Songchun

Zhiyuan Research Institute is a Beijing-based AI research organisation jointly established by the Beijing Municipal Government, major Chinese universities including Tsinghua and Peking University, and prominent technology companies including Baidu, ByteDance, and Xiaomi, with a mission to advance fundamental AI research and build artificial general intelligence capabilities grounded in cognitive science and systematic AI theory. The institute publishes research on AI reasoning, knowledge representation, and AI safety.\n\nFunded through a combination of government grants and corporate contributions from its founding member organisations, Zhiyuan Research Institute operates as a non-profit research body rather than a commercial entity, focusing on foundational scientific advances rather than near-term product development. The institute has launched several research initiatives including work on embodied AI, brain-inspired computing, and AI alignment that connect frontier technical research with China national AI strategy priorities.\n\nZhiyuan Research occupies a specific role in the Chinese AI ecosystem as an academic-government bridge institution, similar in structure to INRIA in France or the Alan Turing Institute in the UK, designed to sustain basic research that may not be commercially viable in the short term but is strategically important for long-term national AI capability. The institute provides a talent pipeline and research platform that supplements the commercial AI research conducted at Baidu, Alibaba, and ByteDance, addressing fundamental scientific questions that applied industry labs are not incentivised to pursue.
