Emergent Abilities

Definition

Capabilities that appear in large language models only at sufficient scale, such as arithmetic reasoning or multi-step logic, that were absent in smaller models. Emergent abilities suggest that increasing model size can unlock qualitatively new behaviors rather than just incremental improvements.
